History of Hums Elementary School
In 1967, the Reverewood Housing Development requested a school be built in their area. In 1970, a fully air-conditioned building was built, which included open classrooms, gymnasium/cafeteria, a little theater, Quest Center, and music rooms.
The school was named after Fred J. Hums, who was born and lived in Mishawaka his entire life. Mr. Hums was president of the School Board for 25 years as well as president of the Campfire Girls and served as a Boy Scout scoutmaster. Every year on his birthday, Fred Hums would return to Hums school for a birthday party given by the children of the school until his passing in 1984.
